What Does It Mean to Be a Godly Man? – 7 Biblical Traits That Still Matter

What Does It Mean to Be a Godly Man in Today’s World?

In a world that feels increasingly uncertain, many men are asking a quiet but important question:

“Am I living the way I should?”

Not perfectly.
Not impressively.
But faithfully.

The truth is—most men don’t need more opinions about masculinity.
They need something far simpler:

  • A clear direction
  • A steady foundation
  • And a consistent way to grow in their faith

That’s where this journey begins.

This post is part of my Faith and Family series.

Godly Men Aren’t Perfect — They’re Growing

A godly man isn’t someone who has everything figured out.

He doesn’t pretend to be flawless.
He’s not trying to impress people.

Instead:

  • He learns
  • He reflects
  • He responds to Scripture
  • He grows over time
  • He seeks God more than approval

Biblical manhood isn’t about outer appearance—it’s about inner strength and direction.

Why Consistency Matters More Than Perfection

Most men don’t struggle with knowing what’s right.

They struggle with:

  • Staying consistent
  • Making time
  • Slowing down long enough to think and pray

That’s why growth doesn’t usually happen in big, dramatic moments…

It happens in small, intentional ones—week by week.

1. A Godly Man Walks in Integrity

In a world filled with shortcuts, dishonesty, and pressure to “just go along,” a godly man chooses what is right—even when no one sees it.

Integrity means:

  • Keeping your word
  • Being the same person in public and private
  • Admitting when you’re wrong

Proverbs 10:9 says:
“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely.”

2. A Godly Man Takes Responsibility

In Genesis 3, Adam’s failure wasn’t just the act—it was avoiding responsibility.

A godly man doesn’t blame, excuse, or escape.

He says:
“I will do what God has called me to do.”

  • In marriage
  • In family
  • In work
  • In faith

Responsibility builds respect. Passivity destroys it.

3. A Godly Man Shows Courage

Courage isn’t loud or boastful.

It looks like:

  • Speaking truth with humility
  • Standing firm under pressure
  • Doing what’s right—even when uncomfortable

Joshua 1:9 reminds us:
“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you.”

A Simple Way to Put This Into Practice

Reading about these qualities is one thing…
Living them out consistently is another.

That’s where most men struggle.

That’s why I created a simple weekly prayer and reflection journal designed to help men:

  • Stay grounded in Scripture
  • Think through real-life decisions
  • Build strength and consistency over time

4. A Godly Man Is Gentle and Strong at the Same Time

The world often gets this wrong.

The Bible shows strength wrapped in gentleness—not weakness, and not aggression.

Jesus was:

  • Bold with hypocrites
  • Tender with the hurting
  • Truthful with sinners
  • Firm with oppressors

A godly man follows that pattern.

5. A Godly Man Guards His Heart

The heart is constantly under pressure from:

  • Lust
  • Anger
  • Bitterness
  • Pride
  • Comparison
  • Distraction

Proverbs 4:23 says:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

A godly man is intentional about:

  • What he allows into his mind
  • What he watches
  • What he listens to
  • What he speaks

6. A Godly Man Serves with Humility

Jesus washed the disciples’ feet—and told them to do the same.

True leadership is servant leadership.

A godly man:

  • Encourages others
  • Helps the weak
  • Lifts the discouraged
  • Serves without needing recognition

Real strength isn’t about being first—it’s about putting others first.

7. A Godly Man Stays Anchored in Scripture

Many men today feel overwhelmed by:

  • Constant news cycles
  • Cultural confusion
  • Conflicting opinions

Scripture provides clarity, direction, and stability.

A godly man doesn’t just own a Bible—he uses it.

He reads it.
He studies it.
He applies it.

His faith isn’t reactive—it’s anchored.

Can Men Live This Out Today?

Yes—but not alone.

God equips, strengthens, and directs.

Men need:

  • Scripture
  • Accountability
  • Encouragement
  • Fellowship
  • Truth

They also need simple ways to stay consistent.

That’s why I created the Strong Men of the Bible — Revised Study Edition, along with a weekly reflection approach to help men apply these principles in everyday life.

What This Resource Helps Men Do

This journal and study approach is designed to help men:

  • Grow spiritually
  • Lead with courage
  • Think more clearly
  • Strengthen their daily walk with God
  • Stay consistent week after week

Final Thought

Being a godly man isn’t about perfection—it’s about direction.

It’s about showing up, week after week, and choosing:

  • Truth over pressure
  • Strength over passivity
  • Faith over distraction

And sometimes… the best way to do that
is to have a simple place to stop, think, and reconnect with God.
